Basic Life Skills Inmates Get in Prison A simple definition of an inmate is a person who has been confined in prison surrounding for a specific period of time. This is due to the fact that the person has gone against the laws of a country. Some people may choose to call an inmate a detainee or a prisoner. While in prison, the inmate must follow the rules and policies of a prison. Detainees put on specific type of clothing. They also carry various duties while in prison such as cleaning. Prisoners have set aside visiting hours for the lucky prisoners who have friends and relatives, however, there are those that have none. Your world should not be shuttered because you are put in a prison. There are various rehabilitation and educational programs that take place in the prison. These programs are responsible for imparting the inmates with important skills that are later applied in life. These programs are offered by government institutions, volunteers, counsellors and various trainers found in prisons. Usually, after prisoners are released from prisons, they face a problem of not knowing where to start or who to run to. The skills they get from prisons gives them courage to face a new life. They can start and run their business, engage in farming or get employed by companies. It becomes possible for such released inmates to start or support their families if they had any. Examples of skills acquired in prisons are decision making skills, assertiveness, self-awareness, writing and communication skills. To start with, decision making skills are applied when making decisions of life. At a point in life, you may be faced with situations that require tough decision making. On other occasions you may require the intervention of a second party. For instance, in case you are faced with a dilemma, you will be required to choose one side and forego the other. Before solving dilemmas of life, you must think deeply of the consequences. Decision making skills are imparted to inmates in and outside prison.

Prisoners are also taught how to read, write and communicate while still in prisons. There is a higher probability of finding prisoners who have never stepped on the gates of a school. After educating prisoners, they walk out prisons proud and feeling lucky. On specific days of the week, basic education is extended to them. Afterwards, they are taken through basic computer knowledge. This keeps them at per even as technology advances. They observe courtesy and politeness as they communicate with phones outside prisons. The skills of writing, reading and communicating are applied in the companies they work for and the businesses they start.

Last but not least is self-awareness. Taking detainees through sessions of self-awareness makes them realize who they are, their worth and what is expected of them. Afterwards, inmates learn to accept their mistakes and take the initiative to change to become responsible members of the society.
